Breeze Icon Updates for April 2024 – with a Little Heart for You!

Hey everyone! Here is a new video explanation of the changes we have done. This time we tackled Labplot, maps, and media icons! Can you believe it? We are now officially past the mid-way for the icons. So exciting!

  1. “Variation on the wifi icon”

I believe that’s actually the icon for removing an RSS feed.

The new database icons are a bit risky to me. The book metaphor doesn’t really map to the concept IMO. A computer database is a very technical thing and the book could mean other things. The thing I like about the current stacked cylinders icon for this is that it doesn’t overload any other meaning, and it’s easy to integrate with other iconography. So once you figure out that stacked cylinders mean database, you can see the pattern everywhere it’s used.

  3. Sorry for the double comment. WordPress messed up while I was trying to edit the text of an unsubmitted one. Anyway I wanted to say that overall these are looking good! I do have a few more comments on specific icons:

Removing the plus badge for the font icon isn’t a good idea; this loses meaning. The icon needs to communicate that it’s all about *adding* a font, not *being* a font. And we use a plus sign badge for adding.

For those “remove” badgesin the corner, we’re currently inconsistent but there’s a rough emerging consensus to use a red X, not a trashcan, not a minus sign, and not a black color. See https://invent.kde.org/teams/vdg/issues/-/issues/43. So I’d recommend doing these icons with red X symbols for their “remove/delete this thing” corner badges.

Using an orange color for those special mail icons seems wrong; we use that color for warnings and potentially risky situations. We don’t want to give people the impression these actions might be risky.

Finally I notice that none of my comments about previous icons were taken into account for the ones I can see in your big icon grid. Are you planning to take them into consideration later? Or did you disagree with all of them?

    1. Thanks for the feedback. For right now, we are in “feedback collection” mode while we do a first pass on the design. When we do a second pass, we will focus on the feedback and see what is sensible to apply. For right now, you may just see reworks on the current Breeze icons irrespective of feedback but not because we are no going to use it, rather, we are waiting for the right time to consider it.
